No illustration can ever do the Holy Spirit justice. However, the Holy Spirit acts in a similar way often behind the scenes empowering believers to serve Jesus and glorify the Father. The Holy Spirit illuminates the Bible for us, assists us in prayer, uplifts our worship, deepens our fellowship, and enables our evangelism. Our texts describe the beginning of the church and the coming of the Holy Spirit as our Advocate, Counselor, and Guide.
Pentecost was the second of the three great annual festivals of the Jews, Passover being the first and the Feast of Tabernacles the other . The greatest number of pilgrims attended the Feast of Pentecost, as that time of the year was best suited to travel.
What happened at this Pentecost marked the beginning of the church. There were, of course, many believers before this, but only now were they constituted as the “body of Christ.” It easier for us to understand God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ than it is to understand the Holy Spirit. The Trinity is a mystery, but we can learn more about our Awesome God, three in one, by studying and applying Scripture.
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 2:1-4 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
