My grandparents lived a block from my mom’s house during my childhood. My mom went to my grandparents’ home leaving me home alone one day. A noise spooked me, and I ran all the way to my grandparents’ house in the blink of an eye. I may be older; however, I still have fears. Being older, stronger, and taller could not make me immune from my fears. I get claustrophobic in tight places such as MRI machines, World War II era submarines, and small caves.
The Israelites saw mighty acts of God. They witnessed the ten plagues, the work of the death angel, the parting of the Red Sea, the destruction of pharaoh’s army, and many other powerful deeds of the Father. Yet, they often feared other nations and turned to worship false gods.
What are we to do with the giants in our lives? How do we deal with multiple massive hurricanes in the Caribbean and the United States, deadly earthquakes in Mexico, countless wildfires in the western United States, devastating droughts in Africa, and the monsoons and typhoons buffeting Southeast Asia?
How do we respond to the specter of terrorism and war which strikes around the world? Countries develop biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons. Terrorists target churches, homes, hospitals, markets, malls, mosques, schools, and synagogues.
The Lord instructs us to remember how He demonstrated faithfulness to us in the past. The Israelites saw the wonderful deeds of the King of Kings. Jesus revealed Himself by miracles, prophecy, and teaching. Hundreds witnessed the resurrected savior who appeared to them after His crucifixion.
10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt His love endures forever. 11 and brought Israel out from among them His love endures forever. 12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever. 13 to him who divided the Red Sea asunder His love endures forever. 14 and brought Israel through the midst of it, His love endures forever. 15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea; His love endures forever. 16 to him who led his people through the wilderness; His love endures forever. 17 to him who struck down great kings, His love endures forever. We have the Holy Bible, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, the testimony of the church, and fellowship with the Lord in prayer. Christ followers look for hope based on the faithfulness of Yahweh whenever we are in the darkest valley. His love endures forever! Jesus is Immanuel, God with us!
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10 New International Version
Prayer:
Father, we have much to be afraid of in this unstable and violent world. We call on You for faith, hope, love, and strength. May we remember Your mighty acts and walk in the love of the Savior. In the holy name of Jesus. Amen.
