Nate’s Notes: I Can Only Imagine

Hagia Sophia – Istanbul Turkey

June 3, 2017

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his  glory.” Isaiah 6:1-3

Open your Bible to Isaiah chapter 6; please slowly read the first eight verses. Imagine this scene and consider the emotions you would experience. The Lord sat on His throne in a vision to Isaiah. The Ancient of Days called Isaiah to be His prophet speaking truth to the nations. Uzziah, who had reigned for many years, passed away; however, God still reigns in glory, majesty, and power. The Lord sat high and exalted in the temple. Kings and emperors would often sit on a raised platform above their subjects. As the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Yahweh has authority over all of humanity and the entire world.

The train of His robe filled the temple. During the wedding of Diana and Prince Charles,  staff carried the incredibly long train of her wedding gown. The length of a royal’s train indicated his or her nobility and power. Because the train of the Lord’s robe filled the temple, His might surpassed that of all the emperors and kings who had ever lived. No army, leader, or nation compares to our Father.

God also reigns over the angels who serve him in many capacities throughout Scripture. Although these winged, majestic beings are holy and pure, the Lord’s glory humbles them. The flying guardians give glory to their Lord, but with their six wings they cover their face and feet. In Hebrew and Greek, words are repeated multiple times for emphasis. The King of Kings has such holiness that His own angels repeat the word three times.

I remember the song “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe when I read of the Lord’s majesty and power.

I Can Only Imagine

By Bart Millard

Surrounded by You glory

What will my heart feel

Will I dance for you Jesus

Or in awe of You be still

Will I stand in your presence

Or to my knees will I fall

Will I sing hallelujah

Will I be able to speak at all

I can only imagine

I can only imagine

Prayer: Lord you are worthy of our adoration and praise. We know that if we do not proclaim your greatness, the rocks will cry out. Give us a passion for your holiness, and may your holiness permeate every facet of our lives. Transform and refine us as we grow closer to you. Amen.

God bless you,
